SHAPING THE FUTURE, ‘Issues and options’

Warwick District Council will be consulting on a new local plan, following the Government’s abandonment of the Regional Spatial Strategy and it’s associated housing numbers. Local Councils can now decide their own levels of growth based upon clearly identified local needs.
The first stage of developing the new plan, that will take the District through to 2028, is to ask local people for their views on the key issues that they want to see addressed over the 15 year life of the plan and secondly, how much new development the Council should be planning for!
The initial consultation will last for 4 months from March until July.
Councillor Alan Boad said, “It is very important for local people to get involved with this important ‘Issues and Options’ stage in developing the master plan. It is a real opportunity to identify and address the needs of every road in Lillington and of Leamington. It needs to include issues such as new employment opportunities, additional housing, recreation, flooding, the type of shopping and the transport infrastructure.”
Over 25 local residents attended the meeting held last night to hear from Gary Stephens who is leading the Local Plan process. There was a useful discussion and various views and comments raised by those present. A system of ‘indicative voting’ using red, amber and green cards helped to gauge the importance, or otherwise, that local people placed on the priorities outlined in the consultation document. From the views expressed it was clear that their were no obvious priorities missing and all were clearly supported and ranked in order of importance with none achieveing no support at all.
On the growth options it was clear that Scenario 2 (an average of 500 new homes per year) gained most support, with no support for Scenario 3 (an average of 800 new homes per year).
Unfortunately the consultation documents were not available for the meeting and names and emails were collected so that the documents could be sent out. The consultation will run until July.
